    Treatment characteristics

These are some of the signs and symptoms:

    • Variations in muscle tone – either too stiff or too floppy
    • Exaggerated reflexes (spasticity)
    • Lack of balance
    • Lack of muscle coordination
    • Tremors
    • Spasms
    • Slow and contorted movements
    • Delays in reaching motor skills milestones
    • Difficulty walking
    • Excessive drooling
    • Problems with swallowing
    • Delays in speech development
    • Learning difficulties

Risk factors include prematurity and low birth weight, complications during pregnancy, any infection that affects the mother during pregnancy and genetic mutations that affect brain development, among others.

Early detection of this disease is essential as it increases the chances of obtaining significant improvement in skills development.

Depending on the extent of the disease, treatments vary from pharmacological treatments to electrical stimulation.

Treatment for Cerebral Paralysis is based on four (4) approaches: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, compensatory education and speech therapy. Animal therapy, electrical stimulation therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also be given.

With the help of a multidisciplinary team assigned to the case, taking into account that the result will vary depending on the gravity of the case, your involvement and that of your family, it will be possible to gradually increase both personal and social autonomy.

Since this treatment is not to cure but to control the disease, you can stay in Spain as long as you consider necessary.

During the first month, the medical team will evaluate you and give you the first appropriate measures and exercises. Depending on the length of your stay, the medical team will re-evaluate and give you new recommendations for your treatment.

The process is hard and slow for the patient and their loved ones.

    • If you take medication of any kind not related to the surgery, do not forget to take with you the necessary amount for your stay in Spain, as well as the medical prescription that will allow you to travel with it without problems.

    During treatment

    • Once you are in Spain, you will have to make an appointment with your specialist. During this visit, the doctor will open your medical record (for which you will be asked to provide all your medical documentation), perform a physical examination and tell you if any further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis.
